Art therapy. What is it and how does it help?

Put simply Art therapy is an effective way of working therapeutically with children and young people. Art therapy puts the emphasis on image making allowing the child or young person to identify themes or concerns in a way that is accessible and non threatening. It is then possible to explore and reflect on these together. Although art is an integral part of the therapy it is not about artistic skill or producing aesthetically pleasing objects. It is essentially a tool that enables self expression, in so doing the individual and therapist are able to open up a space for therapeutic dialogue, exploration and self reflection, allowing for increased self awareness and understanding.

Art therapy can be helpful for children, young people and adults who are impacted by…Bereavement, loss or upheavals in the family, socialisation and communication difficulties, emotional, psychological and behavioural issues as well as aiding the processing of the effects of trauma and abuse.
